Where to Buy Squid San Jose Del Cabo

  • #1

I leave for Loreto in a couple of days. We have fresh caught frozen squid that we got here in So Cal. I have a question can you take it down to Mexico to fish with? Has anyone ever done this. We are going down with a couple of ice chest and figure since bait is scarce in Loreto right now we will take this down to use.
I figure the worst that can happen is they keep it when we go through customs.
Any advice or experiences ?

Thanks

We have taken frozen squid and we also froze up a bunch of sardines and took them down to the east cape a few years ago. package them up real good, like double freezer ziplocs and put them in one of your ice chests. wrap them up in newspaper for insulation.

put them in the freezer at your hotel.

they don't allow ice on planes so freeze them well and you should be alright.

good luck,

A few weeks ago I made a trip from Seattle to the East Cape with about 50 pounds of frozen Humboldt and it was no problem with customs whatsoever. Just make sure you freeze the squid solid before your trip and you should be fine then get them on ice whenever you can find it. And boy did it pay off to have that squid!

Thanks guys. We have fresh frozen from here in So cal so hopefully it will be worth it taking them down .. I would rather take them and have then then regret not taking them. I appreciate the input.

You can buy squid at the SuperMercado in San Jose del Cabo.

That's a hell of a long way to go for bait since he's going to be in Loreto:D

Guess you didn't read the rest of the posts, including the guy flying down 50# to the East Cape.

If chunking's your game, I'd just catch the squid in LTO...Have heard that it's very catchable right now. If you'r looking for whole, 10-15" squid....I'd bring it.

In Loreto, they open pretty much every cooler to see what's in it. I don't know if bringing bait is kosher but I put my frozen squid in a small cooler in my suitcase. Much less likely to be opened. Bait has been hard to get this year so your squid is a good idea.

Apparently you didn't either, since he said "A few weeks ago I made a trip from Seattle to the East Cape" and since you didn't respond to Rayan's post someone would think you were answering the original poster's question

I flew down to La Paz last October with $100 of vacuum packed frozen bait both squid and ballyhoo from JDs in Newport. After getting the green light and no customs inspection, the environmental inspection team asked to see my duffle. They confiscated all the bait and claimed it was not permitted. At the Cabo airport, the environmental inspectors seem to not inspect very many bags, whereas in La Paz, they look through everyones.

Seems we won't be the only ones in Loreto mid-august. The idea of freezing some squid and taking it down is excellent. Seems everybody has their own boats. We'll probably go with Arturo's or the Baja fish company or the local panga's. Getting excited. I'll be happy with some bottom fish (cabriilla) and some butterballs. Gook Luck everyone.

We did get our squid through. Thank GOD we did.. it was a life saver. We did way better than all the other boats and we had enough we shared a few hand fulls with some other anglers who caught with them as well. They asked me what was in the Ice Chest and I told them it was dead frozen squid for bait. I asked them if they wanted me to open it up and they just asked why it was wrapped in news paper .. I said so in case it leaked and that the paper helps it stay frozen. they just waived me on and that was it ... but it was a great call to take it with us .. I would have been pissed if we didnt and found out we should have ... the worst that would happen is they would have kept it .. so go for it if you are going down to Loreto. Seems it was the Kandy the fish wanted.
